WHITE PAPER: RFID in blood banks for improved efficiency and safety

Historically, barcodes have been the prevalent technology for tracking blood bags within the blood bank supply chain. However, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a newer technology that is increasingly being used to track blood from vein-to-vein due to its speed, safety and efficiency.

According to the International Journal of Blood Transfusion Medicine, a task force was created to study and review the current state of RFID with the intent of increasing implementation of RFID within the healthcare industry. The task force recognized the value that RFID technology can play in improving patient safety and enhancing the efficiency of the complex supply chain.
